Seeking: description of characteristics and qualifications.
As a faith-driven, Bible-based and Word-inspired church, we seek a pastor who has the firmest of foundations in his or her personal belief and faith. We are seeking a spiritual leader who will help guide us in growing our ministry, and help us find innovative ways to ways to love and support our neighbors and to welcome in the members of our diverse community. The person we seek will need both the energy and drive to lead an evangelical ministry, and the grace and intellectual humility to do so in a harmonious way. A person interested in understanding and engaging with our community is required.

Above all, we need a teacher and spiritual leader who will lead in the study and reflection of the Word of God, teaching, providing guidance and edification and shepherding our small congregation in the maturation of their faith. We also want to bring that Word to the community outside our doors. We, as a congregation, intend to support our pastor, our members and our community in loving and patient service to our Lord.

Principle Function:
The pastor is to be the spiritual leader and teacher of the Gospel for the church. He is responsible to the Lord and the church to primarily proclaim the gospel and teach the Bible. He is also to engage in pastoral care, provide supervisory leadership in all areas and administrate any paid and volunteer staff.

At this time we have a part time position, 19 hours a week. We have also considered hiring full time on the condition that during a set period of time the congregation grows significantly or our needs change. We are more than willing to discuss the options with any candidate.

Ministry Requirements and Responsibilities:
1. Plan and conduct worship services; prepare and deliver sermons and lead in observance of the church ordinances.
2. Lead the church in an effective evangelism program and in a caring ministry for those in the church and community.
3. Lead in an effective program of visiting members and prospects.
4. Conduct counseling sessions. Perform wedding ceremonies and conduct funerals.
5. Lead the church in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the total program of the church.
6. Cooperate with the Philadelphia Presbytery and local church leadership in matters of mutual interest and concern. Represent the church in civic matters.
7. Act as moderator of the church session meetings.
8. Work with deacons, church officers and committees as they perform their assigned responsibilities.
9. Serve as administrator of the current and future church staff; supervise the work of the ministry staff; both volunteer and paid ministers and directors.

Salary:

$25,350.00 (part time, 19 hours a week)
These hours are negotiable and dependent on candidate’s preferences/needs
2,000.00 expenses
Vacation: 4 weeks

Background:
Our community:
Upper Darby is the largest and most diverse township in Pennsylvania. A “first suburb” of Philadelphia, we are unpretentious and “urban” on our eastern end and tend to be more affluent and “suburban” on the western end. The public schools are an important part of the community and are supported by both political parties and residents. We also have a large and well supported Catholic school system. This has been an immigrant community since the 1700’s. Today new community members are predominantly Hispanic, African and Asian. Yesterday they were Italian, Greek and Irish. Today there are over 60 birth countries and 70 home languages represented among the students of the Upper Darby School District.

Our church.

Although small in number, our congregation is very dedicated. We have a core group of Elders and Deacons who have guided our church from a situation where closure of the church was a real possibility to our current, much more financially secure, position. (This was accomplished in large part by sharing our building with two other small churches and a large daycare.) We have a dedicated Choir, and continue with Sunday School program for children and Bible study each Sunday for adults.

We have an evangelical and mission history, and we are anxious to continue that heritage within our diverse community. Thus far, that has been through having other church groups and organizations sharing the building, but there is more that can be done to welcome and support this diverse community.

We have been active participants in providing services such as preparing and serving meals at the local Life Center and hosting NA meetings. Our members are also active in the schools, local arts and music programs, home and school associations and other community organizations.

We are:
An Evangelical church – need to support spreading God’s word across the world
A Biblical church – all the answers are in the Word – preaching and teaching must be Bible based
A Confessing church – our statement reads:
The Session of BHPC meeting on the 25th of November 2001, joins faithful believers throughout the church in reaffirming the confessional standards of the Presbyterian Church USA throughout her history.

We confess:

• That Jesus Christ alone is Lord of all and the way of salvation,
• That holy Scripture is the triune God’s revealed Word, the Church’s only infallible rule of faith and life,
• That as Jesus welcomed all sinners, God calls us to be a church with open arms,
• That God calls us through His word to live a holy life, and though we fail to live out the fullness of this call, we still trust and strive by God’s grace to attain God’s holy plan for our lives, revealed in Scripture.
